James was raised bilingually in the beautiful old city of Vienna, Austria. Looking back, he‘ll tell you his childhood was influenced heavily by guitar-driven music handed down by his father, an American expat. James played in various bands throughout his youth, and eventually abandoned a jazz-guitar degree to focus on his career as a singer-songwriter.

If you ask him to point to the moment that changed everything, James will tell you it was the summer of 2014, when a tropical-house remix of his song "Coming Over" went viral. The track drew the attention of EDM heavyweights Kygo and Dillon Francis, and their subsequent collaborative remake of James‘s tune climbed to number 1 on the Billboard Dance Chart, earning all three artists an RIAA Gold certification in the USA.

A year later, following another self-penned smash with shooting star filous (“How Hard I Try“, 75M streams), James signed with New York’s legendary Glassnote Records (Mumford & Sons, Phoenix, CHVRCHES). Their first joint release earned the ambitious singer-songwriter two further RIAA Gold certifications (Canada, Italy) for the self-penned and produced single “Miss You” (150M streams).

This spring, James is back with a new body of work. An eight-track vinyl and digital release titled Innerverse, conjured up on a winter-trip to Spain with long-time friend and upcoming artist-producer narou. Together they discovered a new path to the place where James‘s inspiration had always come from: his inner universe.

“Instead of forcing myself to create what might be expected of a hit-song writer, I thought why not just give it to them straight. Like, here’s what it really sounds like. Here’s my inner voice, my inner verse, my Innerverse.” -JH

After expansive US and European tours supporting Milky Chance, Metric, and Jeremy Loops, James is now taking his new record on the road. From the groundbreaking productions he’s so well-known for, to the intimate acoustic moments where it all came from, James Hersey’s Innerverse Tour invites us on a curated journey through his life as a world-class singer-songwriter.
